Infotech is the short term for Information Technology. It consists primarily of computing combined with telecommunications and networking. Infotech also includes expert systems, imaging, automation, robotics, sensing technologies, and mechatronics (microprocessors embedded in products, systems, and devices). A fundamental underpinning for infotech is the use of digital signals over fiber optics, supplemented by satellite and wireless technologies. Infotech affects workers on two levels. First, it has become an important tool that lets workers do more of their job through an intermediary, such as personal computer or expert system. Second, infotech changes the nature of jobs because organizations redesign jobs to take advantage of such capabilities.
